I used Adobe Illustrator, for vectory delights.

That looks amazing. I'll have to fav it. How do you make the shading in illustrator? I was thinking you could copy and paste in place the shape and then cut it with an additional shape and make the color darker, but there's no paste in place in illustrator is there?

There's paste in front and paste behind in Illustrator, which is practically the same as paste in place. I tend not to use the exact technique you've explained there though, I usually use clipping masks.
